As a high school teacher in Ottawa, Reno said he and his students visited Belize many times to snorkel and kayak on the country\'s beautiful beaches.
He said it was Reno who recommended Belize as a retirement destination to his sister.
Tropical weather, relaxed lifestyles and affordable living expenses make Belize the preferred destination for many Canadian, European and American expats.
In all respects, Matus likes to spend time in the country.
She grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.
In a big Italy-
After graduating from college, she moved to Toronto, where she eventually started investing in real estate.
She has five houses in the Toronto area, 23-year-

Belize tourism consultants in Ottawa say tourists should be highly cautious because of the high violent crime rate.

The State Department says sexual assault, armed robbery and murder are common, and local police lack the resources to deal effectively with serious crimes.

Six days after the two went missing.
Joe milhoulen, an American, is a friend of the couple and he remembers the police calling to identify the body.
Later in the afternoon, when he appeared on the court, a detective told him to wait until the pathologist arrived.
\"We had to wait for the night for the pathologist,\" he said in an interview with korosar in northern Belize.
\"This guy told me how busy they are . . . . . . There was a string of murders and suspicious deaths.
The pathologist arrived around 5: 45. m.
Milholen said, but he did not supply.
There is no body bag or something to get the body out of the bush.
\"So I have to figure out exactly where you got a body bag from,\" he said . \".
Milhoulen went to the local hospital but they didn\'t.
He managed to get two body bags from people who are connected to the United States. S.
Know the Belize Embassy in Matos
As he returned to the court, Matos lay on an old wooden door while villursney was taking it out of the bush on a large piece of plywood.
\"I can\'t lie. this is one of the most difficult things I \'ve ever experienced,\" Milholen said . \" His voice disappeared.
\"I\'m exhausted --
Man, I\'m still exhausted.
\"Former deputy sheriff Milholen from Georgia is one of the last to see Matus and villursney alive.
The night before the two went missing, they got together with several other friends at Scotty\'s, a bar popular with foreigners.
Matus sold her ocean.
The next morning she flew back to Canada to start planning the next phase of her life: a part of a year in Italy where she was born.
Milhoulen was supposed to drive her to the airport, but no one was at home when he showed up.
The motorbikes of the limursney are there, but not the trucks of Matus.
Her suitcase is still in the house.
There\'s a problem.
So he called Matus\'s brother in Canada and then contacted WestJet to see if she had checked in for her flight to Toronto.
The airline told Rino Matus that it had checked in.
So milhoren is no longer worried until the plane drops in Toronto without Matos.
At that time, Milholen reported the disappearance to the local police.
Reno initially suspected that his sister had been imprisoned or, worse, imprisoned.
He found his brother David in Georgia.
Reno remembers asking him, \"Is this something your brother can do ? \".
\"Absolutely not,\" replied his brother.
Reno believed him.
The disappearance triggered a massive search by local police and a large number of foreigners.
On the fifth day of the search, a hunter found Matus\'s truck.

Milhoulen said that once the cause of the death was determined, the authorities did not know how to deal with the bodies.

The morgue does not accept part of the rotten body.
The families reluctantly agreed to cremate them.
The murder investigation is still under way, but family members say no progress has been made.

\"I thought at the time, what happened . \" Michael Deshaies, son of John who lives in Barry, is worried.
After learning that he had been arrested, he had not heard from his father.
\"We \'ve been trying to get the consulate to find out where my dad is for three days, but they can\'t find him,\" he said . \".
\"We need the help of the Canadian government, but we don\'t get anything.
You can\'t just leave that guy and leave it.
\"His family found a lawyer and he released bail on him, but only if the police accused him of stealing and handling stolen goods related to unrelated incidents.

Deshaies, who was unable to leave Belize while the court handled unrelated charges, said he still had nightmares about Matus\'s murder.
He wants to go back to Canada and then find a way to spend the winter months.
\"I just can\'t stand the cold,\" Deshaies said with a smile . \".
Meanwhile, Matus\'s family lost hope for the resolution of her murder.
The last time they spoke to the local police was in August, when the chief investigator told Reno that they had not yet analyzed the victim\'s telephone records due to lack of resources.
Reno was also told that the police had no money to make money for a long time.

\"It\'s impossible for them to spend a dime talking to me,\" said Reno . \".
Canada\'s Global Affairs department said that between 2013 and 190, 2017 Canadians were killed in foreign countries, which did not include cases where families of victims chose not to seek assistance from Ottawa.
Walter McKay, a police and security expert, said the government has limited capacity to help in such murders.
