Kempley, England
I\'m lost in the hedge world
The narrow alleys were crowded with people.
I\'m driving slower and slower, looking for signposts.
Just as I thought I was lost, a low square tower and a weathervane peeped over the green plants. St.
Mary\'s Church in Kempley, Gloucester, West England is a hidden gem.
I realized what was hidden.
The gem I am about to find.
I pushed the door open and the first thing I noticed was how cool it was inside. Then I freeze.
But it has nothing to do with temperature.
A large circular pattern is drawn on the bare stone wall.
It was so unexpected that I wanted to know if it was graffiti.
Then I saw another design in chancel and then another one, more, on my right.
It is not clear what they are: red, och and yellow are muted and the paint fades.
Many paintings decorate the old chapel, only 30 steps from the altar to the back wall of the tower, about 900.
Experts from the British College of Art in kotaurd say they are one of the most complete and well-preserved medieval murals in northern Europe.
I\'m standing in one of the best art galleries you \'ve never heard.
As I walked around, aware of the echo on the stone wall, I began to understand what I had seen: Biblical scenes, saints, apostles, Christ, and revelation.
They have lived so long, and they are lucky. it\'s amazing.
During the period of religious reform, during the chaotic period of doctrine disputes brought by Henry VIII, it is estimated that some British religious art was destroyed.
The murals of Kempley were whitewashed as part of this common phenomenon.
They have not been rediscovered or repaired for centuries.
Stop, I imagine the artist, probably the monk, who worked hard on the wooden scaffolding and stretched out into the bucket --
The arched ceiling, with a brush in hand, was around some time in 1130.
I thought about the congregation.
For illiterate farmers, the service of the Latin Church will only be a phenomenon of Falling Flowers and flowers, and how important these images are in teaching them Christian stories.
It\'s easy to think of this because no one is bothering me around. St.
Mary\'s Church is really out of the way.
I sat on a simple wooden bench, staring at the wall, immersed in a delicious and heavy silence.
You don\'t need religion to be fascinated by the old church. I\'m not.
What I like is that they play the role of historical guardian in stone, carving and painting.
It can be traced back to the Norman and the previous Millennium clues.
This reminds me.
And its paintings, holy
Mary\'s roof is the oldest wood roof in the country and one of the oldest wooden doors still in use.
This is not bad for a small church hidden between English edge hedges.
